The Alchemist's young daughter, Gem, shares her father's greed for creating wealth from dross; however, Gem tends to stick with her own personal love, creating and transmuting things and people into her namesake stones-- rather than precious metals.  Like her father, Phil, she does not seem to have any inborn powers and is only a little more than marginal hand to hand combatant.

Her infamy, instead, come from her collection of imbued stones, gems, jewelry, and other items, which are either cast-offs from her father, or based on his alchemical matrices-- altered to create and transmute objects into precious stones rather than metals, or just gimmicked up to produce different effects.  She has jewelry that will alter her appearance, stones that will create optical illusions, and gems that will mesmerize the unaware on sight.  But by far her favorite use of power is to transform those who oppose her into some form of gemstone, jewelry, or trap them within the same.  But that's a far cry from all of what her many accoutrements are capable of.  Gem often chooses to do that because gemstones are... well, they're her personal ideal.

Her arsenal of specialized stones and jewelry is as myriad as her father's creations, and she is always adding to it.  Almost every piece of jewelry she owns and wears has some sort of inlaid power or trap placed within, and those powers might be accessed by touch, distance, thought, or glance-- and on top of that, Gem spends a good deal of her time creating more.  Gem is by far no genius.  But she's conversant enough with her father's theories and with dusty stories of fabulous jewels with mystical powers that she could conceivably vary her schemes for many, many years to come.

BACKGROUND/PERSONALITY:

Gem Stone is the one creation of her father's that can truthfully be said is wholly natural, and not alchemical, and is one of which he is justifiably proud.  Born to Phil and Sophie Stone in what could be considered a very easy first birth, the proud father was heard to remark that when he first saw his daughter, her little green eyes latched onto him and gleamed like gemstones.  The name stuck.

Gem Stone grew up being the apple of her father's eye, but the thing that grabbed her own eye-- almost from the moment of birth-- were shiny, glinting objects like the large diamond in her mother's engagement ring or her own first charm bracelet.  As a young girl, she could stare for hours at the way light glinted off the facets of a piece of crystal or the reflections in a gold band.  It seemed that her name was quickly becoming more to her than just a sobriquet, but was actually a description of her first love.  That love has never been far from her heart, and likely never will be.

Living in a family with an arch-villain at the head was-- at best-- a much different growing environment than the relatively comfortable ones shared by many of her heroine counterparts.  The Stones were forced to constantly move around from home to home, and Gem had to deal with her father being away quite a bit, often put away for months at a time when he was caught in his 'day-job'.  As she pushed into her rebellious teens, Gem began to slowly develop a hatred for the authorities that consistently took her father away from her, and that soon mired itself as a hatred of the colorful heroes and heroines that seemed to constantly lead the charge against her beloved daddy and ruined any chance of her leading a 'normal' life.

That was hardly the only strangeness that Gem dealt with during her formative years.  Phil, on the occasions he was around, had a fairly interesting manner of disciplining her... on a couple occasions, Sophie arrived home to find a solid gold or sterling silver Gem standing in the corner.  This was Phil's version of a 'time out'.  If it was meant as discipline, it backfired spectacularly.  Far from thinking of it as a punishment, Gem delighted in it, and as she grew older, that delight became almost a sexual thrill or lust for her to be transformed.  Of course, seeing that Phil was himself a villain, there was very little Gem could do to warrant a 'time out', and that only made her desire it more.

The other desire she had continued to be her fixation on jewelry and gems.  She couldn't get enough of them, even though her father (when he was around) constantly bombarded her with gifts and trinkets.  Soon enough, she followed in her father's footsteps, turning to petty crimes and embracing the bad-girl image she received because of her attitude, and slowly but surely grabbing her own criminal signature of gemstone and jewelry thefts, and before long leaving crystallized witnesses to her crimes.  This eventually brought her into the public limelight as she held her own against the much more accomplished Wander Woman, who meant to put a stop to her first major spree.  In fact, she might have made off, if not for the appearance of Bubbly Blonde, which has gained the cheerleader-like heroine special animosity in Gem's mind.  Since that time, Gem has joined her father in being in and out of lockup on a fairly routine basis.

Personality-wise, Gem is still a bit of a daddy's girl, but she's grown into a bit more of a gothic/punk mindset.  Gem is every bit as driven as her Alchemist father Phil, and has every bit as much dislike for the costumed heroines that champion justice and law in Hub City.  There are budding rumors that she's bisexual, but in reality, Gem has very little love for anyone other than her father and for a world of still, glinting jewels, provided that they're all hers.

NOTES:  Gem Stone originally created by Cobalt Jade.  She first appeared in Medusa Chronicles Episode 4521.
